Export Layout feature and bug on QlikView 9 SR1

Export Layout Feature

The other day I was ” busy” playing around with the new “Export Layout” feature of QlikView 9.

The “Export Layout” feature allows you to save in a XML format the layout configuration of your QVW documents.

This is very handy especially for version control. As the usage of QlikView grows, so does the need for keeping a good control over the development.

Basically, instead of keeping copies of your QVW files, you can simply export the layout in XML format and apply it back to your document in case you want to go back to a previous layout version.

Quik Tutorial

  1. Open a document (possibly one with some graphs already in it)
  2. Go to the File->Export->Export Document Layoutexport_layout
  3. Save the XML file
  4. Open a blank document
  5. Import the XML you just saved via File->Import->Import Document Layoutimport_layout

Looks like a bug

If you have followed the above instructions you might have got the same error as per the below image.

import_layout_error

The error message normally appears when you try to save the QVW document.

I verified this with Stefan if he was having the same error, but everything seemed fine on his side. The only difference was the QV9 version. I was running on the SR1 while Stefan was  on the initial QV9 release.

As soon as Stefan upgraded to his QlikView installation to QV9 SR1 the error appeared.

The good news

Despite the error, there’s a good news. The bug doesn’t seem to affect the functionality after all. If you re-open the document you should be able to see the layout imported without any issue.

I am not entirely sure where I should report this bug, so for the moment I’ll leave it here. I am sure somebody from QlikTech will notice it.

If you can reproduce the issue or if you get other results than us, please let us know… with software you never know :-)

Hi William,

yes, I get the same error with several qv documents. Whether I start them from scratch or I get them from other users.

Have you tried saving the file where you have imported the layout? that's normally when I get the error…

Tested it with another machine. Saved the file where I've imported the file.. no errors here. Strange.. with software you never know ;-)

maybe you just have to reboot and the error will appear :-)

just kidding, but anyway, if you get the same results as us, well now you know that you are not alone :-)
