QlikView is losing ground in information visualization

by QVApps on April 5, 2011

I admit it, the title is provocative, but the post from Jay Jakosky hit a sensitive spot as far as I am concerned.

I don’t have much to add to what Jay mentioned. Jay’s last paragraph sums it up very well:

QlikView is still the best tool out there for “getting things done”. Graphical display is one of a few areas where QlikView is lagging. But QlikView is too far behind at this point. Charts have not been overhauled since at most version 7. It’s time for a major leap forward.

I have tried to give Tableau a try and I must admit I felt a bit stupid after trying to get something done in a couple of hours. Tableau wasn’t as intuitive as QlikView for a beginner, but damn I’d still love to be able to use some of those visualisations in QlikView.

Anyway, let’s say that this is my way to say +1 to Jay’s post. If you feel the same just add a +1 in the comments or on Twitter :-)

PS Unfortunately, from what we hear at Qonnections, this doesn’t seem to be a focus area at the moment. ..

I have to say that I am in the Stephen Few camp with charts – where less is more. Many dashboards I see are ruined by 3d effects or fancy shading on charts. Also, with a small amount of effort QlikView’s charts can look much better than they do out of the box – often turning off the bulky caption bar on all chart objects on a sheet can make a big improvement.

That said though charts are so fundamental (as Jay stated) to what QlikView is they really do need to be best of breed for the product to stay ahead.

Agree with you and Stephen Few: less is more :-)

I think Stephen would have quite some remarks to make to QlikView visuals though.

Beside personal preferences it’s indeed strange that QlikView doesn’t come with geospatial built-in features and other improvements like bullet-graphs, improved trellis charts, etc etc.

There’s certainly room for improvement there, though QlikView doesn’t seem to be focussed on that right now…

Thank you for resharing my post. I’ve been impressed with the response. Clearly I’m not the only person thinking this!

You are definitely not alone, I only wonder if we are a minority :-)

Nope…I agree with you…the charts are seriously lacking.
